A few things strike me as odd here. One being the tracking of it by other sources never mind ground controllers.

Such a hotly contested patch of ocean mast be swept by a dozen military radar, all of the time. Every country in the region has some sort of overlapping claim and it is a surprise that they aren't watching each other like hawks. Somebody must have plot of it.

The militaries are the last ones to go public with that sort of information. I would assume they pass it along to their political masters and they decide who gets it and when. Lots of politics going on in the area so maybe all the players want to be the ones who find it before the others and are holding their cards close to their vest.

I don't think you can turn them off...at least not since 911 anyway. That aside though, in this case radar is ground based and independent of the aircraft's intentions. Multiple radar stations as well..........not to mention military ground and air radar that may have had an eye on them.

Maybe something solid to work with but we'll see. The original oil slick was tested and did not contain aviation fuel.
So if there is no oil slick but there's debris, my feeling is that it blew up or broke up at altitude.

if it`s SE of Saigon that`s quite the debris field, seeing it`s well off its flight path and where they lost contact

more theory ... There's a deep trench way off of Indochina. It's quite a long way offshore but if that pinging transponder has slid down into there, it may not be heard.

Manila trench is too far east of the flight path and too far north from where it disappeared
